martha: looks like there are two everetts. i can see maccallum right there. martha: i think i see you too. i went digital-free, i highly recommend it. take a break, folks. i missed kim kardashian's entire wedding, chfs -- which was the best part of all. jenna: and we start out with a fox news alert. florida police launch an all-out manhunt for a suspect in a grisly triple homicide, i'm jenna lee. jon: and i'm jon scott. police believe 27-year-old david smith shot ask killed three people last night in the town of lakeland near tampa. we are awaiting a news conference in lakeland. meantime, police are asking for the public's help in finding him. >> we don't know where he is. certainly, we are checking every avenue, because we've got to locate this guy. we certainly think between his paranoid episodes, the fact that he's delusional, that he's very

dangerous. jon: we will take you back to that news conference when it begins. in the meantime, phil keating is live for us right now in miami. phil? >> reporter: jon, investigatorrers describe this triple murder suspect as very mentally unstable. he's paranoid, he's delusional, and he refers to himself not as david smith, but as prince david, and everyone is being warned if you see this man, do not approach him. instead, call the police. detectives in polk county, florida, in between orlando and tampa in central florida believe the memorial day weekend mass murder happened sometime between saturday night and monday afternoon. the victims are two women and one man. one of the women has a 14-year-old daughter. she left that house early saturday morning to go away on an rotc retreat, and when she came home yesterday, that is when she discovered her mother dead. all three victims were shot to death. take a good look at this picture, especially if you're in the south going from florida all

8:06 am
resignation. joining us now, ron fournier, editorial director of national journal. ron, you say it is clear that eric shinseki clearly cares deeply about the veterans. if so, why has -- why have the problems at the va been able to reach this point? >> well, it's a complicated issue, and there's a lot of blame to go around. let's start with the fact that there's two long wars that we're winding down, a lot of veterans coming back. on top of that, we have aging veterans from three other conflicts who are putting a burden on the system that really should have been reformed during the bush administration. they handed off an obvious problem to the obama administration. president obama promised to fix it and hasn't. so we have general shinseki, a man who wounded in battle for this country who, obviously, cares about veterans, you have a commander in chief who no doubt cares about veterans and wants to get this fixed, but, you know, it's been five and a half
8:07 am
years. words aren't enough. pity doesn't heal any wounds. anger doesn't fix a bureaucracy. he obviously has to go, the president has to get somebody else in charge of that agency that's going to help completely overhaul it, and they need a willing partner in congress with republicans which, frankly, they haven't had. so this is, this is something that our government needs to get fixed and get fixed right now and stop blaming each other. jon: why do you think the president hasn't made a move on shinseki to this point? >> you know, it's kind of his m.o. to sit back, weigh all the evidence, take his time. he kind of did this with sebelius over aca, the obamacare. the problem is, you know, the public demands accountability, and both for symbolic reasons you have to roll heads when the job doesn't get done, but also for practical reasons. of for all his merits as a soldier and as a citizen, the general has not done a good job with the va. he's got to go. and you've got to bring in somebody who can do a better
8:08 am
job. so i can understand and maybe even some people can admire the president for being calm and taking his time with this, but what kind of signal does that send to the veterans and their families when this kind of incompetence has been able to go unmet by any kind of accountability? jon: yeah. in a washington post piece today former army general barry mccaffrey describes general shinseki as a quiet professional, and he does seem to be a man of great honor and few words, but is that the kind of person you want running the va at time like this? >> no. clearly, just the record tells you that it's not working out. so you need a change. we need new leadership. we need new leadership on the hill, too, by the way, including with the republican party. this is, this has been a problem that predates obama. it hasn't been fixed under obama, but both these parties have got to get their act
8:09 am
together, quit pointing fingers like we had going on over the weekend and get it fixed. period. jon: all right. so a new, a new, more able administrator, i guess, is what you're looking for? >> oh, definitely. and a partner in congress that's willing to spend the money and do the tough, croirntion, unpopular work that needs to be done to really reform the va. the system we have now with all these regional hospitals that was built for the last century, is that really the best way to go going forward? any tough answers, any real reforms are going to be tough to handle politically. it might affect some hospitals in some lawmakers' districts. this is something that both parties have been cowardice towards reforming, and both parties need to get their act together. jon: and you said criminal charges should be in the works for anybody who has covered up some of the problems. >> oh, i think they should be on the table. you know, we have two problems here right now, as you know.
8:10 am
one is the va with its huge backlog, we're just not serving our men and women, but the other is there appears to be a coffer-up -- cover-up of some of the wrongdoing. well, if it's found that there actually has been covering up of a crime and some malicious wrongdoing that hurt our men and women who serve this country, yeah, criminal charges should be at least on the table. jon: ron fournier from national journal, thank you. jenna: coming up, he starred on the sitcom "friends," but david. >> womenner just played a real life role in solving a crime. we'll come through. ross comes through, jon. a tornado tears through towns, plus the new weather danger just ahead. >> i looked out the window, i was making a sandwich, and there was this rock about this big come flying through the air. that's when i realized, oh, my gosh, the real thing.

8:23 am
jenna: here's the question, is it an irrational level at this point? when we look at stocks this relation to what's happening with the economy, does it make sense that the stock market's where it's at? >> most investors think, well, i'm going to read the headlines and see what the economy's doing. there's a major disconnect between the headlines and the stock market. an old, wise wall street guy told me you could every day open a paper and have ten reasons why you should not be buying into stocks. but if you've done that, you've missed out on the biggest wealth creator we've ever had in this country. jenna: can we actually take anything from the stock market and say, hmm, that's what it's saying about the u.s. economy right now? >> stock market is a future indicator, so it's telling me the economy is good. gdp maybe grows at 2.5% which isn't great, we should be much higher, but it tells me that companies are making money. u.s. corporations are on pace to have their highest profitability ever. and that's tough to fathom.
8:24 am
jenna: who, specifically, when you look at the sectors, where you would feel most comfortable saying even though the stocks are rallying, this is still an interesting place to look at. >> a lot of the stocks that have been doing well are the boring stocks. tech stocks have been hit recently, but apple, microsoft, they've been doing really well. even some like the consumer staples that you buy your shampoo and that type of stuff, doing well. people are still going to go out and shop. jenna: tell me about it, matt. especially when you have to get your makeup done every morning. 8:46 am
about the results. the results show, and again, only 300 people, sponsored by the beverage companies, but it showed people that drank diet soda lost more weight than the people that just drank water. why would that be? >> i was wondering that myself. common sense tells us that water would be more healthy. soy looked at it more carefully. the study was well done but there are some flaws in the study. these aren't people who have never drank it before. they're people who already drink it and half of them continued what they were doing and the other half switched to water. if you like drinking something, especially something sweet and you suddenly have to give it up, it's kind of hard. you might substitute it with something else sweet as well. i think that's part of it. they might have substituted ice cream or other things. you crave it if you have a sweet tooth. the other thing is they were only allowed to have 24 ounces which is about two glasses of water or three glasses of water which is really difficult. most people drink six to eight
8:47 am
glasses if they're trying to lose weight so you might be theirsy or dehydrated and have something else to quench that thirst, too. >> they're also limiting the amount of artificial sweetener that these folks could have. how could that impact the study as well? >> that was to keep the study pure. if you have artificial sweetener in other ways, it may not be in the soda. if you're eating it, that could confuse the picture a little bit more, too. that was one of the good aspects of the study but i do think it is strange they're comparing soda to water. jenna: can you trust the study? when you see a study sponsored by a specific industry group, can you trust the results? >> it depends. i look at a study more carefully. it could be die asked. -- biased. you can't just dismiss it because it's funded by somebody. they're the ones that have the most interest in finding out results. who else is going to pay for the study, really? jenna: so one of the take-aways

from the study, going back to the fact the diet soda drink he weres lost more weight than those who drink water, it makes you wonder, does diet soda enhance my ability to lose weight if i want to diet? is that the way to help me do it? what do you think about that? >> i don't know if this study answers that question but i actually think that it does. so i think if you're a regular soda drinker, especially people who drink tons of regular soda and they are obese, switching to diet soda might be helpful because you're losing some calories and that will help you at least in the short-term. if you're talking about people who drink water, who don't drink soda, i don't think they should switch suddenly. jenna: that could help you lose a few extra pounds. as a doctor, i know everyone tells us to avoid soda. i get it. but what do you do? how do you do it in your real life? >> in my real life, i'm a coke zero fan. jenna: we're not sponsored, by the way. >> i think everything in moderation. if you have something every now and then, then it should be okay. we have to enjoy life.
